Simulation, conversational AI, and XR systems

Applied R&D for training and human performance

Darin Hughes, PhD

I design and build training technologies that combine conversational AI, simulation environments, sensing systems, and analytics to help people practice complex human interactions. My work spans defense medical training, educator coaching systems, mixed reality simulation, and AI driven learning platforms.

PhD in Modeling and Simulation 25+ years building interactive systems

Selected systems

My work spans conversational AI, mixed reality, medical simulation, educator coaching, and performance analytics. These projects show the range more clearly than a general summary ever could.

AICS

Conversational AI platform for practicing real world interactions with adaptive characters, streaming speech, and rubric aligned feedback.

DebriefScape

Multimodal tagging and reflection environment for analyzing recorded interactions in educator training, coaching, and structured review.

M3TS

Mixed reality battlefield medical training system integrating XR environments, physical manikins, and physiology driven scenarios.

BTTC

Battlefield trauma training companion supporting casualty workflow, physiology simulation, and instrumented device integration.

JAKS / BARKS

Simulation platforms for working dog teams combining instrumented manikins, behavioral modeling, and medical intervention training.

Capabilities

Hughes Virtual is an applied R&D studio at the intersection of simulation engineering, conversational AI, and extended reality. The focus is on systems where people practice real conversations, receive targeted feedback, and connect those results back to larger training goals.

Conversational training avatars

Scenario based AI characters that let people rehearse conversations and experiment with different approaches. Use cases include:

  • Teachers practicing conversations with parents or students
  • Leaders and staff preparing for high pressure interactions
  • Trainees working through coaching, de escalation, and support dialogues

Analytics and performance feedback

Training only matters if you can tell whether people are improving. I build:

  • Rubric aligned scoring pipelines for conversations and scenarios
  • Turn by turn analysis mapped to specific learning objectives
  • Export paths into LRS or LMS systems where needed

Simulation and XR integration

Background in mixed reality, embedded devices, and medical simulation, including:

  • Linking conversational tools to XR care under fire environments
  • Physiology engine integration for virtual casualties
  • Sensors, BLE devices, and instrumented medical tools for point of injury training

Current work and collaborations

AICS, LLC

I am a co founder and technical lead at AICS, LLC, a company focused on conversational AI for practice and coaching. AICS provides web based scenarios with avatars such as Sebastian and Morgan that let users rehearse real situations and receive structured feedback based on research backed rubrics.

The platform is built on a custom backend with streaming speech, analysis services, and a front end designed for pilots in classrooms, district programs, and corporate training.

Applied simulation R&D

Through Hughes Virtual, I support projects that:

  • Extend conversational AI into larger training ecosystems and exercises
  • Connect dialogue analytics with XR medical and point of injury simulation systems
  • Design pilots, studies, and evaluation plans for new training tools

Background

Hughes Virtual LLC is my consulting and R&D studio. I work with partners across defense, education, and industry to design conversational AI tools, integrate them with simulations and curricula, and measure how they affect real performance.

I hold a PhD in Modeling and Simulation. My work spans conversational coaching platforms, XR medical trainers, point of injury systems for live exercises, serious games, accessible virtual environments, and mixed reality medical training. I have collaborated with partners in the Department of Defense, universities, and industry, and have served as PI or co PI on funded projects across several agencies.

Selected strengths

  • System design for conversational AI and training platforms
  • Scenario design that blends scripted structure with model flexibility
  • Rubric aligned analytics and after action reporting for dialogue
  • Unity based interactive environments and mixed reality scenes
  • Technical writing for proposals, studies, and publications

Contact

If you are interested in conversational AI pilots, integration with simulation and XR, or advisory work around AI in training, I would be glad to talk.
